Changing it up a little, this is Steven Stokes Chief Visionary Officer for Simple Spirit and coach and healer. I have a story to share.

Shoshanna and I were on a hike a few months ago and I was pretty anxious. We were crossing a stream to get to the other side where a beautiful waterfall and lake promised a fun swimming opportunity.

The stream was deep in one section and there didn’t seem to be an easy way to cross. The people coming back from the waterfall, already wet, were picking up their kids and walking in shoes along the river bed, then dealing with wet shoes on their walk back to the car.

I had on hiking boots that would have filled with water but to take them off meant wading and piercing the bottom of my feet with the rocks we could see at the bottom of the water.

This process of watching and not having a solution was challenging for my brain and caused a lot of uncertainty about how to proceed. I did end up removing my shoes and walked painfully across the river bed.

Later, after we had enjoyed the waterfall and swimming and were walking back to the same spot, the sun was shining a different way and for the first time I could easily see that there were rocks that were a path just below the water’s surface. This time I was able to walk on the top of the rocks, not get my shoes wet, not pierce my feet, and make it safely back to the other side without any drama/trauma.

Those stones were there on the way up but I just had not seen them. I was focused on the fear and concern of the situation vs. the possibility of some other opportunity.

Life is like that sometimes. There is a hard way to do things and often an easier way to do the same thing. Had I been less focused on my fear and more focused on believing there was a solution, I could have shifted the experience on the way up to the waterfall.

Can you think of a time when you made things really hard for yourself only to realize later there was an easier solution? Please respond back and let me know how this particular experience of mine resonated with you.

For me, when I am focused on my fear, logic takes over. When I am focused on possibility, there is space for intuition to be present.

Sometimes what is in the way is a feeling of overwhelm caused by the uncertainty of life itself.
